Paul Tornambe, MD

    Dr. Paul Tornambe is in private practice in the greater San Diego area. He is an instructor in the departments of ophthalmology and family practice at the University of California, San Diego. He is a past president of the American Society of Retina Specialists.

    Dr. Tornambe attended Creighton University Medical School and was Editor of the Medical School Newpaper. He did a rotating Internship  at Highland General Hospital,  Oakland, California where he worked the ER, perfomed general surgery, delivered babies, worked in the ICU and Neurology services. He then worked as an ER Doctor for 6 months before starting a 3 year Ophthalmology Residency at California Pacific Medical Center at the Stanford Lane Hospital in San Francisco, and completed the Ophthalmology basic science courses at Stanford University. He then traveled to St. Louis, where he did a 1 year dellowship in Disease and Surgery of the Retina and Vitreous at Washington University, Barnes Hospital.

    He was a pioneer in the field of Pneumatic Retinopexy, an office based operation to reattach detached retinas and has published more papers on the subject than anyone else in the world literature. He edited one book on Pneumatic Retinopexy and has written chapters on retinal detachment surgery in several others, for such well know institutions as Harvard University, Georgetown University, and Cornell University. He has written over a dozen peer-reviewed papers on vitreoretinal disease, and has lectured at major medical centers nationally and internationally. He also is a journal referee for the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Archives of Ophthalmology, British Journal of Ophthalmology, Australian Journal of Ophthalmology, German Journal of Ophthalmology andRetina.
